Its that time of year again! Time for fall cleaning! T he leaves are changing; the air is cooling and the days are shortening: Fall has arrived. Before we know it, we will be welcoming friends and family for holiday gatherings.Fall is a great time to open your windows and let the fresh air in and get some of that cleaning that you have been putting off done.
Sort and Store
Before you pack away all of your summer clothes and linens, sort through them first and give away or donate anything that you don’t like or hasn’t been used in the last year. Do the same as you unpack your winter things. Really go through them and see if there is anything that can be donated. This will make room for any new additions that you may acquire throughout the holiday season. Not only will this make room for winter clothes, it will help keep your closets and drawers from becoming cluttered.
You know those places you know that need to be cleaned but somehow you always forget to do it? The top of the fridge, ceiling fans and behind the refrigerator, the kitchen pantry shelf. Take the time to dust and clean the places that are often overlooked in your regular cleaning regimen. You would be surprised at how much cleaning your house feels when you get some of these places cleaned.
Save money on heat
Go through your home and determine what you can winterize. Doors and windows are the biggest sources of heat loss. Change out screens for storm windows and place plastic coverings over drafty areas. You can buy plastic window covering that aren’t even visible unless you are looking very closely.
Prep the floors
Think about everything that’s going to be trekked into your home over the next few months. Snow, slush, mud, and whatever else the kids bring home on the bottom of their boots. Fall is a great time to deep clean your floors and prepare them for the winter elements. Think about applying Scotch guard to the heavy traffic carpet areas, or have your hard woods waxed to prevent water damage to the wood.
Clean the Cupboards
Every once in a while it’s a good idea to do a deep clean of the cupboards. Check expiration dates on food and throw out what’s no longer good. This is also a great opportunity to reorganize your shelves as well.
